“When did Mahamrityunjaya chant origin”

This mantra is explained in the Rigveda (Mandal 7, Him 59). This mantra is dedicated to the sage Vashistha, who was the son of Urvashi and Mitravarun. Once the sage Mrkandu and his wife Marudmati did penance for the attainment of a son and Lord Shiva, influenced by his devotion, gave him two options. According to which he had to choose one of the young wise son or the longevity retarded son. Rishi Mrkandu selected the first option and he got a son named Markandeya, whose life span was only 16 years. When Markandeya came to know about his fate, he started doing penance to Lord Shiva. Yama himself came to take him, but Markandeya wrapped his arms around the Shiva lingam and pleaded with Shiva. After that, when Yama tried to remove Markandeya from that Shivalinga, Lord Shiva became angry. And as a result of Shivling, Bholenath killed Yama. After this, Lord Shiva revived Yama on the condition that the child (Markandeya) would live forever. This mantra originated from here. This is the reason that Lord Shiva is called Kalantaka and this mantra is considered to be the only secret mantra known to sage Markandeya.

This mantra can not only liberate a person from the fear of death, but can also avert his unyielding death. By incessantly chanting this mantra ‘one and a quarter million times’, any disease and ill effects of malefic planets can be eliminated. By chanting this mantra, the deeds of the soul are purified, and age and fame are attained. Also it is beneficial for mental, emotional and physical health.
